Open lecture „History as contents of contemporary: decoding the extension of San Michele cemetery in Venice“ by Eglė Bazaraitė
Mar 22, 2022
An extension of the San Michele cemetery, designed by David Chipperfield, stands out as an architectural icon of contemporary burial culture. It offers sophisticated minimal spaces tickling several human senses, like sound, smell, and temperature. However, slowly changing burial customs are constantly reinventing their architectural forms without leaving historical contents. In this lecture I draw ties between contemporary architectural forms of the cemetery and the historical burial culture in the Catholic territories within Europe.
