The ghetto of Venice in search of an “authentic” space:  revaluation of the ancient enclave and dissonant uses of the space and history: a ghetto in the making.

The term ghetto crosses a wide range of narratives, geographical, historical and social contexts and refers to a variety of contrasting places. The contemporary anthropological analysis of a former institutionalized enclave such as the Venice ghetto reveals the images, representations and discourses attached to it and thus the difficulty of defining this ambiguous place. These images of an «authentic» ghetto and the dissonant use of local history and public space by the different actors involved in it participate in a ghetto in the making. From its material, architectural, urban and social realities, and it’s heritage resources how do the actors implement a process of revaluation of this former place of segregation?
