BAS teacher and co-principal Joakim Skajaa will take part in this conference on PhD by design programs in September. The conference marks the end of a research project on PhD by design programs done in collaboration between researchers from Architecture Liechtenstein, KU Leuven, Chalmers University of Technology, and Bergen Arkitekthøgskole - BAS, the conference will be online.

The geographical representation of the world is more an intellectual construction rather than a faithful depiction of the reality: The map is always an interpretation of how the mapmaker sees, understands and interprets the way the world is functioning. Mapmaking is a fusion of discipline as both scientists, politicians and artists creating and using maps in the field of their own environment. This shows the very complexity of what a map really is:- It uses data that has to be handled scientifically, it uses forms, colors movements, in other words "artistic means" and so the same material has to be also handled artistically and aesthetically. - In this respect, the map is fundamentally a political object: an open door to manipulation, and a tool to resist - or strengthen – power. The map is therefore fundamentally a dialogue between reality and imaginary, taken in consideration that what is represented on a map has its roots in the reality, but like a fictional movie, it is deeply romanticized. There is no such thing as an innocent map…
